INCOME Initiatives
In 2009, VITA returned $1.7 million to nearly 1,400 individuals and families in northern Arizona.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) initiative helps community members living with limited resources receive their Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Qualifying families can claim as much as $5,000, which can increase their income by 40 percent. The average refund for the average taxpayer is the equivalent of three paychecks. VITA also educates individuals and families about other financial resources in our community.
Individual Development Accounts (IDAs)
UWNA, BOTHANDS, and Coconino Community Services partner to provide Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) for community members living with limited resources. IDAs provide matched savings (up to 5:1) for buying a home or starting a small business. Through IDAs, nine community members are enrolled in business development classes, one purchased a van for a new catering business, and seven are saving for a down payment on a home.
Meet Renee Hobbs and Arianna...
“When I realized that my income level qualified me for the VITA program, I took advantage of their tax-preparation service and learned about community resources. I began attending BOTHANDS education classes for first-time homebuyers and purchased a home in August 2008!
The VITA preparers told me about the first-time homebuyer’s tax credit, which qualified me for $7,500! This credit has increased my financial stability and peace of mind as I provide for my newborn daughter. I felt so grateful that I became a volunteer. Donating my time to the VITA program is a small way I can give back and help build a supportive community.”

Neighborhood Partnerships
UWNA helps build capacity by attending neighborhood planning and monthly board meetings and by assisting with skills-development activities. Our partnership with the Sunnyside, Southside, and La Plaza Vieja Neighborhood Associations supports safe, caring communities. By providing resources and professional development, UWNA helps these associations further their mission of maintaining the neighborhood’s historical and cultural identity.
