INVESTING IN CARING

Basic needs are the bedrock from which we operate our lives.  Having our basic needs met is essential to our well-being.  For this reason, Caring for people and assisting with their basic needs is a primary focus at United Way of Northern Arizona.

Everyone encounters obstacles in life.  But many lack opportunities they need to overcome challenges they face.  United Way of Northern Arizona assists people in crisis with basic services needed to help them attain self-sufficiency.  We also work to provide a safety net until that self-sufficiency can be reached.

According to a recent Coconino County Community Assessment, the top five   necessities survey respondents reported living without were:  food (41%), prescriptions (40%), clothing (35%), health care (34%) and rent/housing (30%).   Results also found that per capita personal income levels were lower in Coconino County than in Arizona as a whole and both were lower than the national income levels.  More than half of the respondents had housing that is considered by the U.S. Department of Housing to be unaffordable.  Because of serious challenges such as these, United Way of Northern Arizona is partnering with government, philanthropic, civic and business leaders to help people in our community achieve greater self sufficiency, health and well-being.

United Way’s vision of Caring is one where all individuals are physically, emotionally and spiritually healthy.  By increasing the community’s support of responsible parenting, nurturing family relationships and respectfully caring for our elderly, we foster health, safety and well-being.  We are in essence, carrying out our mission which is: “improving lives by mobilizing communities to create lasting changes in community conditions.”

Some 2005 examples of United Way’s mission in action are as follows:

  • 937 individuals were screened and received medical services for diabetes
  • 81,456 wholesome meals were served in a comfortable and safe environment
  • 643 women and children were provided shelter to escape domestic violence
  • 81 victims of crime received financial support during crisis
  • 118 individuals affected by 15 fires were assisted
  • 260 domestic violence victims received 914 units of counseling therapy
  • 7936 individuals/families were assisted with meals, transportation, housing and utilities assistance, toys/gifts, clothing, furniture, comfort kits and back to school needs

As people in crisis get back on their feet, they gain not only self-sufficiency but also self-worth.  Your investment in Caring provides you and United Way the ability to deliver vital services that help people.  Together, we can help shelter the homeless, feed the hungry, provide medical services, and care for the terminally ill.  That’s Caring.

That’s What Matters.
